چکیده

A conventional description of the effect of meniscus friction is based on the concept of the dynamic contact angle u, which depends on the meniscus velocity V according to the Tanner law, u}V. However, recent high-resolution experiments on spontaneous uptake of wetting fluids by capillaries have questioned the universality of the Tanner law. We analyze a mechanism underlying the phenomenological concept of meniscus friction, which finds experimental confirmation. As a case study system, we consider a forced flow of meniscus in a cylindrical capillary. It is assumed that the capillary is prewetted and the coating uniform film could coexist with the static meniscus. Numerical analysis is restricted to van der Waals fluids for which the disjoining pressure P as a function of film thickness h has the form P}h. For these fluids, the equilibrium apparent contact angle is zero. Within the lubrication approximation of the film flow, we show that the nonzeroth dynamic contact angle first appears when the fluid velocity exceeds a certain characteristic value. For smaller velocities, there is no appreciable distortion of the meniscus shape, compared to the equilibrium static configuration. The deformations of the film profile are concentrated at the transition zone between the macroscopic meniscus and the submicron precursor. While the concept of dynamic contact angle seems to be inappropriate for slow flows, the concept of contact line friction serves as a practical alternative to it. We show that when the velocity is slow and there is no visible contact angle, the friction is Newtonian, i.e., the relation between the pressure drop DP and the meniscus velocity is linear. As the velocity increases, the linear relation transforms into a nonlinear asymptotic law DP}(V ln V). © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1604392#

Relevance of dynamic wetting in viscous fingering patterns.

We demonstrate that wetting effects at moving contact lines have a strong impact in viscous fingering patterns. Experiments in a rotating Hele-Shaw (HS) cell, dry or prewetted, show consistent morphological differences. When the wetting fluid invades a dry region, contact angle dynamics yield a kinetic contribution to the interface pressure drop that scales with capillary number as Ca(2/3) but ...

Capillary-driven micro flows for the underfill process in microelectronics packaging

Capillary-driven micro flow allows liquid transport by interfacial force without external pressure or momentum. Theoretical and experimental studies have been conducted to predict the movement of the flow meniscus in the application of capillary underfill flows. In a flip chip package, two-dimensional motions of flow front through solder bumps can result in unwanted air void formation because t...

Discontinuous liquid rise in capillaries with varying cross-sections.

We consider theoretically liquid rise against gravity in capillaries with height-dependent cross-sections. For a conical capillary made from a hydrophobic surface and dipped in a liquid reservoir, the equilibrium liquid height depends on the cone-opening angle alpha, the Young-Dupré contact angle theta, the cone radius at the reservoir's level R(0), and the capillary length kappa(-)(1). As alph...

Dynamics of a microliquid prism actuated by electrowetting.

A microliquid prism is a microchannel filled with two immiscible liquids, whose interface acts as a refractive surface. To steer a light beam that constructs optical images, the interface profile or the contact angle is modulated through electrowetting on a dielectric. Accurate, yet agile actuation of the liquid prism critically depends on the understanding of dynamics of the fluid interface. H...

Interface equations for capillary rise in random environment.

We consider the influence of quenched noise upon interface dynamics in two-dimensional (2D) and 3D capillary rise with rough walls by using a phase-field approach, where the local conservation of mass in the bulk is explicitly included. In the 2D case, the disorder is assumed to be in the effective mobility coefficient, while in the 3D case we explicitly consider the influence of locally fluctu...
